Introduction

In a previous article, we covered the fundamentals of cloud computing and explored the many benefits it provides to modern enterprises.

Most of the material presented in that in-depth article aligns with the foundational concepts assessed in the entry-level AWS Cloud Practitioner certification.

In another article, we explored the core concepts of agentic AI and looked at how AWS cloud services enable developers to build AI-powered applications.

That article introduced many of the foundational topics that align with the AWS Certified AI Practitioner certification.

While certifications are a nice-to-have (if you have a knack for badge collecting), they do not tell the full story as a software engineer.

Certifications can strengthen your resume and even serve as a nice flex, but ultimately what matters is how you apply that knowledge as a software engineer.

In the following sections, I will cover the different AWS certifications and Anthropic certifications that software engineers can pursue.

AWS Certification Paths

In this section, I will briefly cover the different certification paths and/or specializations one can undertake.

As an engineer, you have the flexibility to pursue one or more AWS certification paths.

From AI, cybersecurity, data, and DevOps to cloud architecture, networking, and machine learning, AWS offers a wide range of certifications for professionals across many roles and experience levels.

Among the most popular advanced AWS certifications are the AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Professional) and the AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer (Associate).

The following link highlights the different AWS certification paths and how you can work your way up to obtaining the most advanced certifications AWS has to offer.

While many newcomers begin with the AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner certification, it is not a prerequisite for any other AWS certification path.

However, it is a foundational-level certification that every developer should have when working with AWS services.

While rough time estimates are provided between certifications as you level up, your ability to study for and pass these certification exams depends largely on your level of experience and familiarity with AWS.

Anthropic (Claude) Certifications

In addition to AWS certifications, Anthropic now offers four paid certifications that aspiring developers can try to obtain.

As you progress through the certification path, you will develop increasingly advanced knowledge of Claude AI, its APIs, MCP, and enterprise AI architectures.

These certifications are not available to individuals. You must be employed and your employer must be affiliated with the Claude Partner Network.

The following list highlights the four new Anthropic certifications:

Claude Certified Associate Foundations ($99) — Validates your ability to use Claude effectively for business workflows through prompt engineering, model selection, output evaluation, and responsible AI best practices.
Claude Certified Developer Foundations ($125) — Validates your ability to build applications with Claude using the Anthropic API, prompt engineering, tool use, Model Context Protocol (MCP), and production-ready development practices.
Claude Certified Architect Foundations ($125) — Validates your ability to design secure, scalable, production-ready Claude solutions by applying architecture best practices, context management, MCP, Claude Code, and enterprise AI integration principles.
Claude Certified Architect Professional ($175) — Validates your expertise in designing and leading enterprise-scale Claude deployments with advanced architecture, governance, security, scalability, and organizational AI adoption strategies.

The exams for each of these certifications can be completed online and the certifications themselves are valid for one year.

Conclusion

We briefly explored the AWS and Anthropic certification paths. While the AWS certifications are open to anyone, Anthropic-specific certifications can only be obtained if you work for an employer who is partnered with Anthropic.

As stated earlier, whether or not you choose to pursue these certifications is up to you. While they can be a valuable addition to your resume, how you apply the knowledge you gain is ultimately what demonstrates your true expertise.
